Draft mock up of website

This is a mock up of the layout of the college’s website and where the magazine would be found, it follows the house style well, and attracts the audience too. I aim for the website to be able to launch the promotion of the magazine due to the viral advertising as well. I hope that if the reader likes the magazine that much, then they can order it off the website too.

Audience feedback on final product.

Online copies Vs hard copies

The difference between the online version and hard copy of my magazine will be that the hard copy has to be eye catching to actually make the reader want to pick it up and physically turn the pages, whereas it’s not a necessity for the audience to click onto a website and find the magazine. Also because they’re competitions within the magazine I believe it would make it more exciting for the reader to actually be able to send off the form in a materialistic way. Another plus side to a hard copy magazine is that you do not need a battery to power it or any technical knowledge either. Hard copies do have their down sides though, such as it being too expensive to print monthly copies and also once the copies are sold out they cannot be reprinted/reissued, so the audience only have a limited amount of time to get their copy. The qualities of the magazine being online are that you can attach links to the magazine (for subscriptions e.t.c) as well as being able to explore the magazine’s website even further too (to see previews and editorial pieces). The idea that my magazine will be online is reassuring simply because more teenagers (who my magazine is aimed at) use the internet a lot more than ever, this includes social networking sites, surf engines and blogs e.t.c where they can talk about the magazine with their friends and re-blog certain pieces of information too. Also because of the viral advertising campaign too, that will also help to promote my magazine even further. It can be quite a bad way of accessing the magazine too, because there could be inaccurate information given as well as unwanted adverts popping up too.

Viral marketing

This is only a mock up of my viral marketing campaign and the language I would use.
I’ve used a double entendre ‘KNOW’ it’s used in the magazine front cover itself as well as in the advert. The message that viral marketing wants to pass on is that if you see the advert you should let other people know about it as well, I think that with the use of the magnifying glass again a double entendre has been used (to look then send the message on.)
I based my marketing on this advert, because it contains a double entendre, and cartoon pictures as well. Also just like my advert it’s commanding the audience to do something and uses the same house style as the drinks bottle, similar to my college magazine.

Drafts of front cover.

Audience feedback/ questionnaire
1.       What do you think to the overall display of the front cover?
It stands out and the colours used are very eye catching
2.       Do you like the picture on the front cover, and does it give a clear representation of life at Wyke?
Yes I do like the picture and I do believe that it shows how hard the students work.
3.       Would you say the masthead is overpowered by the college’s logo?
Yes, the logo is way too big and doesn’t even fir on the page properly!
4.       Do you believe there should be a main headline/ more headlines on the cover?
Not necessarily a main headline, but just more headlines in general.
5.       Is there a clear house style used throughout the front cover?
Yes it’s quite clearly purple and green.
6.       Do you think the magazine should be sold, therefore the front cover then contains a barcode?
No, it’s only a college after all and students cannot necessarily afford to pay for a magazine.
Audience feedback/ questionnaire
1.       What do you think to the overall display of the front cover?
It stands out really well and the colours all complement each other too.
2.       Do you like the picture on the front cover, and does it give a clear representation of life at Wyke?
Yes I do like the picture because it very informative.
3.       Would you say the masthead is overpowered by the college’s logo?
No not at all, the masthead has more power than the logo and the text used for the masthead is clearly trying to imitate that of the logo.
4.       Do you believe there should be a main headline/ more headlines on the cover?
No I don’t believe there should be more headline’s, there’s more than enough displayed, but maybe a main headline would make the front cover even more striking..
5.       Is there a clear house style used throughout the front cover?
Yes, quite clearly purple and green.
6.       Do you think the magazine should be sold, therefore the front cover then contains a barcode?
Maybe there should, because unlike the other front cover this has more of a professional finish and this could be completed for every issue with the money received.
Audience feedback/ questionnaire
1.       What do you think to the overall display of the front cover?
I like it, it’s fairly captivating..
2.       Do you like the picture on the front cover, and does it give a clear representation of life at Wyke?
Yes it does depict the college really well.
3.       Would you say the masthead is overpowered by the college’s logo?
A little bit, but not as much as the first front cover, maybe the masthead could be made a little bigger, or more effects used to made it stand out clearer.
4.       Do you believe there should be a main headline/ more headlines on the cover?
Yes, again I think there should be a main headline, to entice the reader a little more.
5.       Is there a clear house style used throughout the front cover?
Kind of, although the masthead’s purple colour, doesn’t correspond well with the logo’s purple colour.
6.       Do you think the magazine should be sold, therefore the front cover then contains a barcode?
No not at all, students cannot afford to pay for the magazine.
Audience feedback/ questionnaire
1.       What do you think to the overall display of the front cover?
It’s captivating and bold.
2.       Do you like the picture on the front cover, and does it give a clear representation of life at Wyke?
Yeah, the main image used is great.
3.       Would you say the masthead is overpowered by the college’s logo?
No not at all, I like the way the logo is interweaved with the masthead.
4.       Do you believe there should be a main headline/ more headlines on the cover?
Yes, I think there should be a main headline, to draw the reader in a little more.
5.       Is there a clear house style used throughout the front cover?
Yes, it’s clear that purple and green are the main colours you want to use.
6.       Do you think the magazine should be sold, therefore the front cover then contains a barcode?
Perhaps there should be a barcode to give the front cover more style and flare.

Price:
For a college magazine, I believe it’s acceptable to make my magazine free, as proven by the S.E.G scale students don’t have much money, but they could make a contribution if they wish. I think this is a good way of selling my magazine and respond with good sales figures too. It will be issued once a month both as a hard copy and on the internet/ the college’s website.

LIIAR analysis of existing college magazines #2

First of all the mast head on this magazine does stand out rather well, the colours and the way it’s sectioned off make it look more attractive. I like the way it shows the issue number and the fact it displays it’s a new revamped style! The cover does hold a consistent house style too. A negative point about this cover is the fact that one of the ‘main’ images doesn’t correspond to the headline over the top of it, also it’s not clear to the reader who the shadow images of the people are and their isn’t a distinct clear main image either... could it be the shadows or the books pictured? There is a barcode in the bottom right hand corner, so it’s clear that the institution behind the magazine are wishing to sell it.
The contents page for the ‘Medway mag’ doesn’t actually indicate that it is a contents page, so to me it would seem that the reader wouldn’t know what page they’re turning to. Also there is not a single page number to fit alongside the captions or pictures. The layout of the page doesn’t really have a specific style to it either, it’s all jumbled up and looks blocked, squared and sectioned too.  Another good point observe is that the house style shown on the front cover doesn’t even follow on to this page; it doesn’t set of a very professional message to the reader.  Also the pictures they have selected to put on the contents page haven’t been taken by the institution, they’ve just been   taken off a search engine and copied and pasted onto the magazine, again not giving it a very professional finish and flare.

LIIAR analysis of existing college magazines

The Grimsby Institute magazine

Looking at this magazine at first glance, it does stand out quite effectively because of the consistent colour scheme running throughout, although I don’t really believe this is a good thing as the colours used are gory and bold! Secondly I think the masthead stands out quite well and is also very dominant; even though it’s not clear as to why the magazine is called ‘gx’. The main image is not very true to life as it’s in a cartoon style it is fitting though as it contrasts the colour scheme. There are two thumb nail pictures, giving a preview of what will feature in the magazine and will influence the readers decision  as to whether to buy it or not. Finally there isn’t a main headline, so the main image doesn’t have anything to relate to. I should imagine that the magazine isn’t part of an institution. I guess that the editor of the magazine wanted to portray a positive view of the college- shown by the use of the house style, and the casual image made by the student’s photos on the front. Obviously the magazine is targeted at the college students and teachers too, yet the main age range it’s aimed at around 16-20.
Contents page
The house style has not run through to the contents page, which proves that the organisation of the magazine might not be that good. There is a lot of going on such as two separate backgrounds and about 10 different colour themes too, some may say this is a good thing, but to me I believe that the reader wouldn’t know where to look. The advertisements on the left are a good way of promoting things going on in and around the college; also it follows the proposed house style used on the front cover too, unlike the contents page itself. The college’s anchorage is used again as well as on the front cover. Another bad point about the contents page is the images; although they are eye catching they don’t have any information underneath so as the reader you don’t know why the images are there in relation to the magazine. A conventional style has been used for this contents page, as there is a very detailed description connoting each article’s subheading.
East Riding college front cover:

This is the East Riding College’s magazine, and as the reader you can easily tell this by their logo in the bottom right corner, unlike the Grimsby institutes magazine. It does have a consistent house style, but it’s very dull and not very eye catching either. The issue shown is from spring 2010- yet the main image doesn’t really portray this, although the caption with it does correspond unlike the ‘gx’ magazine. The mast head is very clear and dominant and does also fit in with the house style used. Another negative point about the front cover is that it doesn’t have the college’s slogan, so the magazine is relying on the mast head to draw attention to the reader and nothing else. Also I don’t understand what is featured in the bottom left corner it doesn’t really make sense or relate to anything either. As discussed previously the main image isn’t very fitting but also it doesn’t draw the reader in, as it’s just the backs of peoples bodies, students can’t relate to this especially if no eye contact is made from the image, this could deter the audience away from the magazine, which isn’t the publishers aim even though the magazine is free. The target audience will also be for college students aged between 16-20 just like the ‘gx’ magazine. Unlike the ‘gx’ magazine I believe with the house style used that the college students have been portrayed in a very negative light.
Contents page:
This contents page does kind of follow the house style, but another colour has been added, although this is not a particularly professional thing to do, it does make it more eye catching and entice the reader in more, it also makes the article features easier to read as well, even though they don’t have any description underneath the sub heading. Also the images on the page don’t have any informative content about them just like in the ’gx’ magazine, so in the readers mind they just look like floating images! What is fairly clear though is the mast head on this page, it stands out well and evidently the reader knows what page they are reading.
